Alice Springs to Darwin, Day 7 - June 22, 2000

THE BIG DAY!!!!! We knew from the start that Darwin would be the highlight of our trip, but little did I realize I'd be all teary eyed to leave as if I was leaving family. But that's still a day and a half away.

One of the pictures that I sent Mo from the states was a picture of Bill bending over to look through a hole in a rotten tree. Mo promptly wrote back saying Bill would have to exit the plane backwards so they could recognize him. He complied and we met up straight away. We had to push the men out of the way so Mo & I could have a big hug. Bill & Peter each had on their boxer shirts and seemed to hit it off.

We gathered our baggage and went to our motel. It was the first motel that didn't have power keys. From the motel we did a limited tour of Darwin then on to daughter Donna's home to meet her boxers. We've had a wonderful trip but I REALLY miss my babies. Getting a 'fix' from these wonderful fur-kids was just what we needed. Next we went on to daughter Leigh's for more boxers and finally to meet Lacey and Cagney. What a pleasure to sit on the floor and play with the girls.

Lacey was such a wonderful hostess. She liked to make sure she had a gift for us. Each time we returned to the house she found her rope and danced for us.

Here we received a message from our niece Charlene and one from Rachel. Charlene couldn't contact our house/dog sitter and she was worried about the home front. We gave her additional numbers to call and heard back before we left that everything was fine. We still had a nagging feeling that the decision we made for their care was probably not the best but there was nothing we could do about it now.

Mo rushed us off again to the 'market' where we were to pick up Aussie Jan. The market is what we would call a flea market. Bill kept returning to the didjeridus but he couldn't figure out how to get it home.

We met Jan where she was selling raffle tickets for a 'ute'. (read SUV) She has promised to deliver it personally when our ticket is drawn. Jan is the same jolly person she appears to be on the list. While Jan was finishing up we walked down to the beach and watched a magnificent sunset. We even had a parasail outlined against the fiery sky.

Then with Jan tucked safely between Mo and me in the back seat, we set out for Tim's On The Bay where we enjoyed a scrumptious seafood dinner with prawns as big as Bill's fist.

Peter dropped us back at our motel with the promise to be back at 8:45am. They waited in the car as we read the note attached to our door and fiddled with the lock to get in. Finally Peter could stand it no longer, rolled down his window and said gently, "You're in the next room!"
