Alice Springs to Ayers Rock, Day 5 - June 20, 2000

We departed our hotel at 6:45 for the trip to Ayers Rock. Our first stop along the way was a camel farm. For a mere $4.00 we were allowed to ride a camel. I wouldn't have missed it for twice that much. I think this is something I've always wanted to do and a short ride around the paddock was plenty. Now I can say I've done it. What a hoot.

We stopped again at a souvenir shop and then once more at a photo stop. A long steep climb, lined by small purple fire resistant flowers, took us to a spot where we could photograph the Olgas (read big red rocks). Our driver, Geoff, told us that the small purple flowers are the only things that survive a brush fire. Then back in the bus and on to our hotel.

The Ayers Rock complex is a planned resort constructed in a circle with five motels and a shopping center. Our motel was fifth along the circle. The complex had five thousand rooms and not a single vacancy.

We had a quick lunch and caught the bus to the Olgas and Ayers Rock. These two attractions are nothing but big rocks. BIG ROCKS!!! We stopped at the Olgas first and most of the tour hiked through the gorge between two of the rocks/mountains, then on to Ayers Rock for the setting sun and all the colors. It was a very disappointing night for colors. As one man put it, "You pays your money and you takes your chances". The sunset was beautiful, however it was over the buses not the rock.

A short bus ride took us back to the motel where we had dinner and crashed. A body can only stand so many sunrises!
