Sydney to Alice Springs, Day 4 - June 19, 2000

Our pick up for the airport was a nervous 10 minutes late. When late we tend to think we've been forgotten. We arrived at the airport with plenty of time but found that the size for carry on luggage is much reduced from US domestic flights and we had to check everything but our cameras.

Our plane was a 737 and it was probably good not to have the carry on bags. Like the Orlando to LAX there would have been precious little foot room. When we arrived at the airport there was some question about the ability to take off. Due to the fog, visibility was about 1,000 ft or less. By flight time it had improved dramatically.

Taking off from Sydney airport was a new experience. Not more than 30 or 40 feet above the runway we entered the clouds, not a thick bank, just enough to obscure Sydney.

In the US we have four different time zones, each an hour apart. Then we confuse the issue with daylight savings time. In some states you can switch time zones every time you enter or leave a small town. There is also a time difference between Sydney and Alice Springs but it is only ½ hour. That's novel to us.

The Alice Springs airport is extremely small and we came in on the downwind leg of our landing pattern. There was only one runway and it doubles for a taxiway. As we flew parallel to the runway we could see a Qantas plane taxiing back the runway to the terminal. We turned base and then onto short final. The landing was smooth and we deplaned down the stairs and into the terminal. We opted for a cab to our motel instead of the shuttle and it ended up being cheaper that way.

After checking into the motel we grabbed the courtesy shuttle into Alice Springs, walked around and had lunch. We topped it off with an ice cream from Wendy's.

The bathroom in our motel unit was two pieces of molded fiberglass with a seam around the middle. Never saw one like that before. Great idea. The room was a strange shape, all funny angles. I found this to be delightful, not the same old square box of most motel rooms.

A steakhouse was highly recommended for dinner and looking forward to that we laid down for a short nap and got up for our tour the next morning.
