Auckland to home, Day 15 - June 30, 2000

Our last day was a free day and we used it to mingle with the New Zealanders in their downtown shops. We found a wonderful shop called the Gift Box where I found a new fur kid. Then I found a t-shirt showing a New Zealand traffic jam (sheep blocking a tour bus). At Borders we picked up a CD by a sixteen year old Maori with a heavenly voice.

We had tried to get a reservation for dinner at the Sky Tower but there was nothing available any evening before 9pm. When we started to buy our tickets to go up, we asked if there was any possibility of an opening for lunch. They told us probably not, the restaurant was usually full for Friday and Saturday lunch but she called up to check. They did have an opening and we went up. Our lunch was superb and the view was worth the wait. The air was clear after the storm that had passed through the day before. For a restaurant that is usually full for Friday and Saturday lunch they sure had a lot of empty tables. In fact, there were only two other tables occupied.

We wandered in and out of stores and always going down hill. We started back toward the motel and found a shop selling sheepskins. On the wall they had a beautiful area rug that would set off our living room with a flare. But, alas, the budget was already strained. I'll save my pennies. We did buy three more sheepskins (and ordered two more on the 'net when we got home). These will be used for bedside rugs/boxer beds.

When it was time to head back to our motel for our ride to the airport we took the coward's way out and hailed a taxi. The Sky Tower was lit up against the early evening sky and it was time to say farewell to the lands down under. Our visit was both too short and too long. Our fur kids were calling us home.
